Want to share writing lessons?

You’ve come to the “write” place! My name is Michelle Joy, and I am the Writing Coach for my school system (K – 6). I am working with all the teachers in four elementary schools to implement Writer’s Workshop. If you have questions about writing lessons for K – 6, please ask, and I’ll try to answer them. Also, if you have any lessons to share, please Post them here.

I will Post some of my favorite writing lessons each week. Check back each week to find more lessons for your classroom.

#1  Children often write stories with sentences that are just action sentences (I went to see the dentist. She pulled my tooth out. I went home.) Encourage them to add in thinking sentences and talking sentences (internal and external dialogue).  The writing improves when they write with a mix of thought, action, and dialogue.

This is a great start, but we need some fodder for conversation, some grist for the mill, so to speak. As I said elsewhere, sharing invites sharing. Why don’t you tell us a bit about your experiences, thoughts, beliefs about writing? What sort of writing questions could you help answer?

This is a great introduction. Unless you send a link to this blog to people who you know and who you know will post lessons and other topics, no one will find this site and add to it.

This looks like a good beginning. Have you given the site address to the teachers that you work with? Is there a way for them to post their lesson ideas on your blog as well? It seemed like you referenced the idea, but I didn’t see a way for them to do so.

I think this site can be useful to me in finding writing ideas for my students. However, I am unable to open the lessons.

Hi Michelle,

You have a nice start here. I am looking forward to some more entries. It would be nice if you could provide some pictures of yourself and your school.
